INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON KNOWLEDGE AND SCHOLARS IN SELJUK ANATOLIA
Call for Symposium Papers
The Seljuks, one of the most important and remarkable dynasties in Islamic history, ruled over a vast and dynamic geography that included Central Asia, the Middle East and Anatolia between 1040-1308. The period of their rule marks a period of great strides not only in the political-military field but also in the field of science and thought. The Seljuks inherited the legacy of Islamic civilization, which had been developing for four centuries, and in parallel with their political-economic power and conquests, they carried out important works and achievements that would carry this civilizational accumulation to further levels and new horizons. Anatolia, which started to become a Turkish and Islamic homeland through the Seljuks, has had an exceptional place and importance in this context. In fact, Anatolia is one of the most important centers of the vast cultural geography where the Seljuks ruled, and their footprints can be traced. For this reason, the conquest and settlement of Anatolia by the Muslim Turks, which started with the Malazgirt Victory won against the Byzantine Empire on August 26, 1071 under the command of the Seljuk ruler Alparslan, should be considered as a long-term and permanent reconstruction, construction and revival movement carried out with science, ideas, wisdom, love and understanding of coexistence. So much so that the flagbearership of this movement, which continued to exist despite the serious shocks caused by two great challenges such as the Crusades and the Mongol invasion, passed from the Seljuks to the Ottomans.
Seljuk Anatolia chronologically corresponds to the period between 1075-1308 in the history of medieval Turkey. Especially in the 13th century, when Islamization reached a certain intensity, madrasas supported by rich foundations were established in prominent cities of the period such as Konya, Sivas, Kayseri, Tokat, Malatya and Kastamonu, and thus scholarly activities intensified. These cities were also centers of knowledge and wisdom in the following centuries. Therefore, a deeper understanding of the Islamic scholarly tradition in Anatolia, which has been filtered through centuries, requires first identifying and analyzing the Seljuk scholarly heritage here. In this context, there is a need for new and collective scientific studies to be carried out especially on the basis of scientific personalities, works and institutions. With this awareness and responsibility, we expect the contributions of esteemed scientists to the International Symposium on Science and Ulema in Seljuk Anatolia, which will be held online between 24-25 November 2023 by Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University Faculty of Theology and Abdülkadir Geylani Islam, Science, Culture and Art Application and Research Center (İLKSAM).
